In our Featured Website section this month, we take a look at http://www.squarefoot.com.hk/. Launched in late 2007 but already a popular stop for those looking for middle to high end property, http://www.squarefoot.com.hk/ provides visitors with detailed listings of residential property for sale or rent in Hong Kong, Kowloon, New Territories and Outlying Islands.

As usability and clear presentation of information are critical to the success of a website of this nature, Compelite worked very closely with the client to develop a layout design which was practical, efficient and attractive. But there was also another perspective to consider. As the property agents who list their properties on the website are also important, their feedback and suggestions we taken into consideration as well.

Striking the appropriate balance between form and function, while satisfying the needs of the various stakeholders was an involved process, and the design went through many adjustments and refinements before final approval. All throughout Compelite’s design team worked in close concert with Square Foot’s management team to ensure that the end result was just right.

Of course, a property portal needs more than a great look and feel - it needs an array of applications designed to make the process of home hunting simple, efficient, and yes, even fun. Building on Compelite’s existing CMS system framework, several custom designed modules were created with both the end user and the administrative users in mind. These include:

Property Search Tools

• View the property and area details
• Contact the property agent directly from the website
• Search expansion feature gives users one-click function to find more properties with similar details, in the same building or from the same agent

Property Management Tools

• A specially modified Content Management System was created to make it easy for property agents to upload individual or bulk property listings, minimizing the administrative work involved in keeping their listings up to date.
• Reporting tools provide information to the agents detailing how many views their properties received, which were clicked on, and requests for more information/view appointment.
• Scheduled expiration of property listings, with one-click listing extension for properties which are still on the market.
• User management feature allows property company to add multiple representatives, and specify which properties each are responsible for.

Establishing Web Presence

When looking to establish a web presence it is very important to ask yourself what you need, and equally as important to find a company that can provide you with everything in that list. It is not good enough to go to one company for web design, another for emarketing, and yet another for search engine optimisation. All aspects of a website tie into one another and so too do all aspects of programming a website.

All to often we see clients coming to us for search engine optimisation (SEO), after having their site designed by another company fully in flash or javascript, when one of their main priorities was to be visible in search engines. Flash is one of the worst programming techniques to use when website visibility in search engines is paramount. Yet because the company that designed the website specialises only in flash web design and not in search engine optimisation; when asked by the client will my website be search engine friendly the company replies, "yes, just wait two or three months". Or they compare with other flash websites "Cartier, Nike and Adidas all use Flash and their websites are extremely visible". Yet what they can't tell their clients is why these websites are so visible.

One ranking factor used by search engines as a guage of website ranking, is sites linking in to your website. You can use this as a factor in your search engine ranking, but keep in mind that this is only 1 of over 100 different aspects that all join together to boost your overall ranking.

By typing "link:www.yourwesitename.com" into Google, Yahoo or MSN you can see how many other websites link back to you. Lets start with the first example given above - Cartier. Cartier have 376 websites that link to them. See for yourself by typing "link:www.cartier.com" into Google. This is quite a good amount. Of course the more websites linking to you the better. I should also point out that it is best to have one-way incoming links. This means that you should not link back to them. These are the most valuable links to have.

In comparison to Cartier, Nike and Adidas are way ahead. Adidas have 2,330 incoming links to their website, and Nike have 3,090. Another aspect to note is how these links are gained. Since Nike, Adidas and Cartier are such large brands, they gain their incoming links organically - people link to them with out them asking and therefore, incoming links are build continuously at a steady rate. This is by far the best way to build incoming links.

Compare this with many of the packages found on the internet, many of them utilising black-hat SEO techniques (SPAM techniques), which offer link-building campaigns and the like for US$20 (or something along these lines). These companies should not be trusted when it comes to building incoming links as they more often than not use SPAM techniques such as linking to link-farms, sites setup purely to build reciprocal links. They link to you, you link to them. Sometimes you will stumble across these sites and wonder how on earth you found them. Many of these companies have now been banned from the search engines as algorithms become more advanced.

Relying on incoming links to build your website ranking, if you have a flash website can take years upon years. It is best to work on building your companies recognition in the industry and let incoming links build themselves. This will result in the best link strategy. Getting back to establishing a web presence, consider the following items when building your website:

• eMarketing - Update your clients regularly. Design, send, track, archive and manage your communications through events, surveys and/or newsletters.
• CMS - Content Management System. Keep your website up-to-date simply.
• Graphic Design - Will you require a corporate identity, brochures or adverts?
• Web Applications - Tools to simplify your common tasks, such as 360 appraisals, photo uploaders, graph updates etc.
• Search Engine Marketing - SEM - Get your site listed in the top 20 positions of all the major search engines through search engine optimisation (SEO) or Pay Per Click (PPC) Management.
• On-Line Promotions - Benefit from high volume traffic of other websites such as Geoexpat or asiaxpat.
• Live Website Monitoring - Monitor who visits your website with the ability to chat to them live, as well as use valuable statistics that reflect your marketing techniques.

If the company you are with cannot provide you with all the services that you need, then you are quite frankly with the wrong company. The most important aspect of building a web presence is to choose a company that can both understand and implement all of your needs and desires, not to mention suggesting other options that you may not have thought of. Australian Wine Centre Website

Australian Wine Centre have chosen Compelite to design their brand new website. Special features include an on-line wine product catalog and an on-line shopping list submission system.

Australian Wine Centre was established in Hong Kong in 2004 and specializes in the sales and marketing of premium "boutique" wines from Australia. EUROSUISSE - 'Life with Style'

EuroSuisse launch their new website in October, complete with Content Management System (CMS), PHP programming and MySQL database management system.

The company’s focus is on designing, tooling and overseeing the manufacture of products which meet the specific needs of the client, as well as the consumer. QAS Aviation Website & Magazine Advert

QAS Aviation International Limited have launched their new website this month. With its simple design, it is both visually appealing and user friendly.

Along with their website, they have lauched an advertising campaign in the popular magazine "Orient Aviation".

Pacific Business Press Website

Pacific Business Press have launched their new feature-rich website this month. This website uses a Content Management System with PHP programming and a MySQL database management system, and comes complete with Event Registration and a Jobs Ticker.

Central Park Hotel Launch Website

Compelite have completed Central Park Hotel's visually appealing website. This website uses Flash to create a mosaic-like home page and is complete with an online reservation area.

Hong Kong Dragons Website by Compelite

The Hong Kong Dragons Aussy rules football club have gone with Compelite to design and host their new website: www.hk-dragons.com.

This professional looking website is created using HTML, PHP and MySQL technologies. It features a content management system which allows the 'Dragons' to update their own site when neccessary, and comes complete with a photo gallery which is also run by the content management system.

The origins of the club stem back to late 1989 where a bunch of rugby supporters bet Ray Wood that he would not be able to establish an Aussie rules club in Hong Kong. Ray took on the challenge, and recruited the likes of Bruce Brown, Paul Hart, Graeme Stillwell, Colin Reid, Ric Reddell, John Thompson, John Dillon, Paul Devereux and Ian Clyne to assist. The Dragons were formed soon after.

RAIL SOURCING SOLUTIONS (RSS) is a Hong Kong based organisation that specialises in managing the supply chain process for equipment and materials within the international rail industry.

Using a mix of HTML and Flash elements the railsourcing.com website blends classic design with media that is still search engine friendly. Most Flash websites look great but due to the nature of Flash programming all content is missed by the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo etc.

Australian International School NEW Website

We had great fun working on the school’s website. The Australian International School chose Compelite to revamp their website to give a new look and feel with a fresh layout to show the school in its true Australian spirit.

Due to the amount of information on this site Compelite designed the interactive drop-down menu to allow users to easily navigate the site and find over 100Mb of information in over 160 pages.

This website also includes our real-time on-line survey for parent and pupils’ feedback to help the school implement new ideas and procedures.

Brinks Corporate ID revised

The well established security company Brinks came to Compelite for help with an update of their corporate image. Compelite revamped their Hong Kong identity and applied new layouts to the corporate communication documents. This also included Electronic documents for direct e-mail quoting.

Brinks also invested in our NetFax Server solution which allows them to send a Fax from any PC on the network via one Fax connection.

Additionally, Compelite worked on redesigning their website and developing their monthly electronic newsletter using our e-newsletter system.

Melbourne's Yarraland Group use Compelite to develop website

Yarraland, a new consulting company in Melbourne, have launched their first website, with the help of Compelite. The whole project was done via e-mail and a few phone calls - showing global business doesn't have to be hard work!

Mr Philip Kirkwood, the MD of Yarraland Group found our website on the internet and liked our portfolio's clean, functional design approach. After an initial phone call for pricing and a project brief, Compelite then produced a design which was accepted after a few minor changes. Punchline Comedy Club New Web Site

A favourite with expats in Asia, John Moorehead has launched a new website for his Punchline Comedy Club.

The new website was developed in Hong Kong by the Compelite team, who also work with the club to send thousands of e-mails reminding comedy fans to purchase their tickets for the show. The newsletter allows people to click on links to book tickets, times and locations or find out more about their favourite comedians.

The site allows users to add their names to the mailing list for the city they are interested in and the club outputs a monthly newsletter featuring the funniest comedians flown in from the UK circuits. So, sign up yourself and have a laugh at the Punchline Comedy Club.

Gallery Oi Ling to have online presence

The well known Gallery Oi Ling in Central's Hollywood Road is getting ahead of the field by putting the gallery online. Users will be able to search and view images of the extensive range of rare Chinese artefacts...

The database features a CMS (content management system) with an easy to use interface which allows the gallery to update their site without the need of any programming skills, thus saving time and money in keeping the website up-to-date.

Australian School choose Compelite for website revamp

Compelite have been chosen to redevelop the Australian International School's website. With around 100 pages the new site will support a much more intuitive navigation system and a total graphic redesign will show the school in a much more professional and fun manner.
